Partners of the Firelands Coastal Tributaries (Erie Soil and Water Conservation District, Erie MetroParks, and Old Woman Creek Reserve) have teamed up to offer several rain barrel workshops over the 2009 summer season. A total of five workshops, held at both Osborne Park and the Old Woman Creek Reserve, educated area residents on the benefits of rain barrels with assisting them in building their own rain barrel to take home. The workshop is moderately priced at $45 per registrant (includes all instruction sheets and materials to build one rain barrel). Over 75 "graduates" of our rain garden workshops are now proud owners of their very own rain barrel.
So when's the next workshop?
We wish we could say in the next week, but unfortunately we do not have enough to hold a workshop. But not to worry! We are hard at work scouring the local and regional countryside for food grade barrels to hold more workshops. We have a few leads and hope to be getting more barrels soon. Please check back to our site for the next available class or you can always call 419-626-5211 to be put on a waiting list and we will call you when the next class is scheduled.
Erie County Services Center Installs Rain Garden and Native Plantings
Native plantings and a rain garden were installed with help from volunteers from the Erie County Mater Gardeners Program and the Friends of Pipe Creek Watershed at the Erie County Services Center July 14 and 15, 2009 as part of the Erie County Naturescaping Project. This project was funded through the Great Lake Commission Erosion and Sediment Control Grant Program to demonstrate native plants and rain gardens to be used as a solution to reducing negative impacts of stormwater run-off. This project is administered by the Firelands Coastal Tributaries Watershed Program to provide education to local residents, businesses, developers, and public officials in the Firelands area. In addition to the installation of the native gardens, prairie and riparian enhancements will also be installed later in November of 2009.
